Castle-Hunting Americans in Ireland

My wife and I have crossed the Pond many times in search of real castles. Castles are funny...it's okay if they're crumbly, even ruined. It isn't often you get to enjoy something that's ruined, is it? Castle Salem is amazing because you may sleep in the same bedroom as William Penn did hundreds of years ago...yes, Castle Salem is an Irish b&b. Specifically, it's a "modern" house from the 17th century that is directly attached to a 15th century castle. Amazing!
But how about finding a castle that's still intact yet awaiting
restoration? That's the rarest of the rare. And that's how we found Castle
Salem (pictured left) in West Cork, Ireland,
an Irish treasure awaiting restoration.
